 Objectives

 1.                To review how the body’s immune system responds to Tuberculosis and why it fails to eradicate it.

2.                To review the clinical patterns of the disease, particularly those present in the lung.

3.                To discuss strategies for screening and diagnosis.

4.                To review the epidemiology of TB, in particular the following issues:

a)               how and why the incidence has changed over the past century, particularly from the points of view of nutrition and therapy.

b)               To discuss the re-emergence of TB, particularly in HIV- affected countries.

5.                To discuss health budgeting in an HIV-affected region in Africa from the perspective of  TB screening & therapy using case examples.

1.                Which components of the host immune system are most important in defence against tuberculosis?

2.                What are the major pulmonary manifestations of TB?

4.                What is the standard therapy for tuberculosis?

5.                What factors over the past century have altered the incidence of tuberculosis in our community?

6.                Given a limited budget, what is the most efficient way to detect and eradicate tuberculosis in poor rural areas?
